Aoshima is a small island located in the southern part of Miyazaki Prefecture. The island is connected to the mainland by a bridge and is home to one of the most scenic shrines in Kyushu. The lush subtropical vegetation covering the island creates a striking contrast with the surrounding ocean.

Aoshima Shrine:

Aoshima Shrine is dedicated to Yamasachi-hiko, a deity from Japanese mythology. The shrine sits at the heart of the island, surrounded by dense jungle-like vegetation of subtropical plants. Walking through the torii gates and along the stone path feels like entering another world. The shrine is especially popular as a power spot and draws many visitors seeking good fortune in marriage and safe travels.

Devil’s Washboard:

Surrounding the island is a remarkable natural formation known as Oni no Sentakuita — literally “Devil’s Washboard.” These dramatic wave-cut rock platforms extend along the coastline and were formed over millions of years by the erosion of alternating hard and soft sedimentary layers. The rippled surface stretching out toward the sea is unlike anything you’ll find elsewhere in Japan and makes for an incredible photo opportunity at low tide.

Aoshima Subtropical Botanical Garden:

Just across the bridge from the island, the Aoshima Subtropical Botanical Garden offers a relaxing stroll through a diverse collection of tropical and subtropical plants. Admission is free, and the garden is a pleasant stop before or after visiting the shrine. It’s a great place to take a break and enjoy the warm Miyazaki climate.

Aoshima Beach Village:

After exploring the shrine and surroundings, Aoshima Beach Village is the perfect spot to recharge. This beachside complex has a restaurant with a relaxed, resort-like atmosphere right on Aoshima Beach. The hamburger is juicy and satisfying — highly recommended after a long walk around the island. The fresh juice made with local Miyazaki fruits is also a must-try.
