Takachiho is a quiet mountain town deep in the heart of Kyushu, where Japanese mythology feels less like a story and more like the landscape itself. Misty gorges, ancient cedar forests and centuries-old shrines give the area a mystical atmosphere that is hard to find anywhere else in Japan.

About Takachiho:

Takachiho is known as the land of Japanese mythology, where the gods are said to have descended to earth. Its shrines still preserve these ancient legends.

The town’s most famous sight is Takachiho Gorge, a deep canyon carved by the Gokase River through columns of volcanic rock formed by eruptions of nearby Mt. Aso. Sheer cliffs rise on both sides, and the water below is a striking emerald green.

Takachiho is in the far north of Miyazaki Prefecture, more than 100 km from Miyazaki City. Public transportation is limited, so a car is the best way to get here. From Miyazaki City, take the expressway (Higashi-Kyushu Expressway) to Nobeoka and continue on the national road into the mountains. The whole trip takes about two and a half hours, and using the expressway for the first half is much faster and more comfortable than driving on local roads the whole way.

Walking Around Takachiho Gorge:

The best way to see the gorge is on the walking path that follows the cliffs above the river. The path leads to the Mana Falls, a graceful waterfall that drops straight into the gorge. Along the way, several viewpoints offer different views of the canyon. Allow about an hour at a relaxed pace, including photo stops.

Tip: Rental boats on the river are very popular and require a reservation, so book in advance, especially on weekends and in autumn. Seeing the falls from the water, beneath the towering cliffs, is the highlight of the visit.

Tip: Wear comfortable walking shoes. The path includes stairs and slopes, and the stones can be slippery when wet.
